Printed White Elephant gift exchange rules beside wrapped party gifts

White Elephant Gift Exchange Rules Printable for a Smooth Party

The confusing part of a gift swap usually begins when someone takes an opened present. Who moves next, can it be taken back, and when is a gift safe? Agreeing on a short set of rules before the first turn makes the game lively without making guests argue over a technicality.

Print the rules for guests

This rules sheet covers what to bring, how to draw turn numbers, opening or taking a gift, what a displaced player does, and when a gift becomes frozen. It ends the exchange once everyone holds a gift, with no extra final swap. Post the sheet where players can see it and read the take back rule aloud before play.

Set up the exchange before the first turn

Ask each guest to bring one wrapped gift within a spending limit you announce in advance. Put the gifts together without names on the outside. Write one number for each guest on small slips of paper, mix them, and let each person draw a slip. These slips are your white elephant number cards; the printable itself is the shared rules sign.

Number one opens a wrapped gift. In number order, every later player may open a wrapped gift or take an opened gift from another player. A person who loses a gift acts immediately: they may open a wrapped gift or take a different opened gift. They cannot take back the same gift in that immediate response.

Track takes and finish cleanly

Count each time an opened gift changes hands by being taken. After its second take, that gift is frozen with its current holder and cannot be taken again. The host can mark two small ticks on a separate note for each popular gift, or simply announce the count when it changes hands. Opening a wrapped gift does not count as a take.

Continue until the last numbered turn and any resulting chain of takes is complete. The last person without a gift opens a remaining wrapped gift, and the game ends when everyone holds one. This version has no extra final swap for the first player, so nobody needs to remember a bonus turn. If your family Christmas game prefers a different limit or a final swap, agree on that change before the first present is opened and update the posted rules.
